Thought of the month

"Heroes are not statues framed against a red sky. They are people who say this is my community and it is my responsibility to make it better."

Over there

This story was so unusual and we believe has such political ramifications, we wished to put it here even though it may not pertain to the normal drinking water stories we cover. It turns out that large amounts of synthetic estrogen used in birth control pills and hormone therapy are finding their way into water systems. The hormones are excreted from women’s bodies, pass unaltered through wastewater treatment plants, and then enter surface water systems. Studies now are beginning to show that even small concentrations of parts per trillion are enough to alter the natural hormonal functions of aquatic organisms.

In Europe, male fish downstream of wastewater treatment plants are developing female characteristics, and losing male traits. Testing has shown that not only are male fish producing female eggs yoke protein, but they have also been found to be producing eggs in their testes. Female fish also are effected by producing eggs at the wrong time of year.

How will environment be affected long term? The Canadian Department of Fisheries is currently doing an in-depth study of the effects in aquatic ecosystems. Preliminary results are beginning to support that hormone contamination indeed is causing the feminization of male fish. The study also is looking at how hormones are affecting invertabrates and frogs.
